FLOOD IN THE AWAHURI.
The Bridge Damaged. Communication Suspended, Our readers will be sorry to learn that early yesterday morning the span on the Feilding end of tbe Awahuri Bridge was washed away. It would appear that the construction was none too substantial, as the flood was not exceptionally high. It is said that the piles were not even driven, and the stringers rest on the bank alone, instead of on a timber sill. We learn that Mr E. J. Armstrong predicted that the first fresh would prove fatal, as has been the case. We fear until a groin is constructed, and the channel diverted, frequent damages to the bridge will be the inevitable result. The bank, too, near Fraser Bros.' store is rapidly disappearing, the current now striking direct against it. If the money that from time to time has been expended in repairs had been more advantageously laid out, there would have been a different tale to tell to-day. Meantime steps must be taken to effect temporary repairs with as little delay as possible.
