A women named Harriet Cleave was struck dead by lightning on Febrnary 39, at Evan's Creek, near Mudgee (N.S.W.). She had just covered up her sewing ma-, chine, and had one of the needles m her hand, wh^n the. electric fluid penetrated the slabs of the hut and killed her on th» spot. The needle was twisted m all directions. By latest accounts the tone of the wool sale is much firmer. We were glad to see Mr Lee, of Terrace End, about again to-day. His illness has been very tedious, the result it will be remembered of a broken lep, which had to be set more than once, on the last occasion the serf ices of Dr. Curl having to be obtained. The Committee of the Manawatu Racing Clnb at a meeting held on Monday evening, at Walkley*s Hotel, resolved to substitute a District Maiden Race for the District Produce. The conditions will be similar, and the nomina* tiom will close with general entries. Some people think that an insolvent must pay 10* m the £ before he can get his discharge, nothing of the kind ; (says the Weekly Advertiser) if no wages are owing he can be pushed through the Court without paying a fraction. If debtors were compelled to pay 10s m the £ before they received their clearance, what an emigration from New Zealand there would be.
