The Wairarapa sustained a good deal of damage to her port quarter. The Wairarapa, it is now^ stated, was going "down the' bay* "under half-speed) but the Adelaide was being pushed to such an extent that flames fully 6ft high issued from her funnel. On entering the narrow part of the west channel the Wairarapa kept on her course, and the Adelaide ' struck her on the quarter, causing her to heel on her beam-end. The accident, caused much consternation on the Adelaide, one of | whose passengers jumped on to the Wairarapa. The latter's passengers all acquit Captain. €hatfield of any blame. Later. The Wairarapa has sustained serious damagf. to her port quartei* through the s^a. Adelaide colliding" with her. The port quarter of the Wairarapa was indented, her poop deck being praised', up, Which was caused by the beam end b eing forced up considerably out of position, and the bolts iii i the iron upper deck in the second are started. It appears that the Wnirarapa , Jeft seven ;minutes before the Adelaide, and was going full speed, and being followed by the Adelaide which was being pushed to such an extent that flames fully 6ft high were issuing from her funnel. The passengers interviewed here state that no blame is attached to Captain Chatfield and that, in their opinion, the boats were not .racing. Midnight Some of the passengers by the ss Wairarapa give altogether a different 1 account of the collision after to that alveary telegraphed. They assert that t there undoubtedly was a race; at that the Wairarapa waited helew WilHanistown for the Adelaide to come up to her. It was fully known on board that a race was intended. ; : } -
