Failure of Thomas and Company. The lonic's Cargo. Messrs Thomas' Colonial Indebtedness. Colonial by Addressed Letters. Further Gold Withdrawals. Low Price of Frozen Meatt Australian Wheat. The London and Chartered Bank lose £120,000 by the failure of Thomas, Sons, Company. The money was ad vanced on fraudulent securities, but is fully covered by the amount of the reserve fund. An East Indian institution is also reported to have been victimised to the extent of £50,000. Fully 60 per cent, of the New Zealand frozen meat, per lonic, was damaged by fire. The authorities of the London Chattered Bank state that their loss by the fmuds ot Thomas, Sons, and Co. does not exceed ninety thousand pounds, which is more than covered by the reserve fund, invested m consols and kept quite distinctfrom the bank's paidup capital of one million pounds. The Postmaster- General Fawcett states that many thousands of letters and papers c obviously intended for transmission by the P. and O. mail boats to Australia are very week detained, owing to the regulations as to special address. Sir Hercules Robinson will return to the Governorship of the Cape shortly. More gold withdrawals for Australia are expected ac an early date. A slight fall m the London Chartered Bank stock has taken place. The Dunedin's cargo of frozen meat is realising 6£d per Ib. Australian , wheat cargoes for shipment average 43s Cd, and for London direct, 41s 6d. Colonial wheat, ex store, is unchanged. - Le Temps says that the only effect of the recidiviste scheme will be to .swell the ranks of ruffianism m the Pacific by the banishment thither of those whom it has been proved impossible to reform.
