The Wellington Races. (UNITED pBE a S ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, Feb. 2. Thei second day's racing 1 was attended with success equal to _ that of . the previous day, but the attendance was not quite so large. The weather was very fine. All the events wereexceed ingly well contested, but m most of them the favourites won, and consequently the totalisator paid small dividends. The course was m much better condition than yesterday, the sloppy portion having dried up. The time recorded to-day was much better. Bailway Stakes. From the start Witiora had the lead with Administrator within a length, Mischief lying third hard held, Minerva a length behind. On the turn into the straight Clifford let Mischief out,, and she was soon alongside the leader. The whips v ere now out on Administrator and Witiora, while Mischief's jockey was sitting still, and the latter won with ease by a length, Minerva a had fouith. Time lmin 21secs. On passing the lawn the second time Orient still had the premier position, Scrutineer second, and Clarence third. Towards the fnrze the top weight closed on the leader, and a splendid race ensued, the three horses taking the last hurdle together. The Poet was a warm favourite, 3 to 2 being laid on him, 2 to 1 against Salvage, 3 to 1 against Leonata and Normandy, 4to 1 against Refrigerator. The Poet got away with the lead, but nearing the river Refrigerator held the premier position, with The Poet on his quarter, and Salvage a length behind. Coming past the Stand there was but little alteration, except that Norman by went up to Salvage, Leonata still bringing up the rear. At the back of the course Salvage was creeping on the leaders, and on crossing the road was on level terms with The Poet. Entering the straight, Salvage was half a length ahead, and he was never caught, winning easily, The Poet a length behinJ,with Refrigerator a good third. Time, 3min I3sec.
