: Under the direction of the Geo?raf»hical Society of -A nt wcrp an interesting book about- New Zealand has just been ipiiblished by Mr Ht^'ven. Jt a}>peavs -from this work" that, with a population of about 500,000 whites, and 44,000 Maoris, there are at present- 1643 establishments in the colony, giving employment io about 18,000 people. Among.st them there is a manufactory for musical instruments, twenty-three establish^ ments for the production of agricultural implements 49 for carriages, 25 for shipbuilding, 48 for furniture, 2 for chemicals, 4 for woollen goods, 40 for hemp and flax, 18 for rope, 35 for shoes, 34 for preserved meat, 131 for flour, 29 for beer, 17 bone factories, 119 tanneries, 224 sawmills, 1 paperniill, 2 starch mills, 18 basket factories, 129 brick and tile factories, 1 clothes manufactury, 135 iron foundries, and 12 soap factories. It is quite clear from this 1 list that the colonies ar£ fast putting themselves in the position of supplying their own wants, and will be less imd lciss dependent upon us for manufactured goods. v
