PENALTY FOR DRUNKENNESS.
A discovery of rather an extraordinary character has just been brought to lit' ln by the officials of the Wellington Magistrate's Court. Under the provisions of the Licensing Act of 1831 the amount Wliijsh is to be imposed m the cose of per* sons confided of drunken and disorderly, conduct must be not less than £1, ,and not more than £'3. The magistrate?, however, who have at various times oc cupied the Bench since the Act came intb force hare, singular to say, been under the impression that the minimum penally was only 10s, and for thi past three years those who have been convicted under the 144 th section have been mulcted m that amount— just half the fine fixed by the Legislature.
