EDUCATION BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board took place yesterday. Present — Messrs Watt (Chairman), Saneon, Ross, Bridge, , Baker, ' "arson, and Tapin. Appointment CommitteeThe report of the committee was as follows :— Kesolved, That should a school be established at Terrace End, Mrs M. A. Harvey be communicated •with. F. Beth une's name placed ou tlie list of applicants for employment. Resolved, That Miss Wicksteed can be used as a monitor at Taonai, but she must pass the fifih standard before she can be employed as a cadet. H. Sanson's resignation of the Awahuri school was accepted. Resolved, That the Board baa not any married teachers on the list, nor any certificated female teachers, and therefore recommend the Awahuri Committee to accept Mr Strachau at once. A ktter from the Wanganui Committee as to the appointment of MrSanson io the fourth mastership was received, and al&o a letter from Mr A. J. Seaton re further vacancy.— The report was adopted.] Scholarship Money. It was resolved, That the Secretary inform parents that the amount of their scholarships will be withheld until certificate of birth be obtained, or failing the possibility of obtaining such certificate, then upon the production of such evidence as may be satisfactory to the Board. Higher Rducation. . The report of the committee, Sir William Fox and Rev. J. Rot-s, upon the teachingof higher subjects m primary schools was read. % After a long debate the motion m favour of receiving the report was put and carried unanimously. Notice of Motion. Mr Carson gave notice of the following motion -.—That a committee be ap pointed to consider the desirability of discontinuing the teaching of the higher subjects at the Wanganui Boys' and Girls' District High Schools j and without any -further delay, of making some other more satisfactory provision for the impartiug of secondary • education m Wanganiii, either by establish - ing a High School proper, or by making uso of the advantages offered by another; educational institution ; [such committee to consist of the Chairman, with Messrs Baker, Bridge and the mover ; to report at the next meeting. Building Grant. Letter from the Education Departnient announcing that £2786 had been allotted to the Wanganui Board out of the £50,000 grant. Parawanui. Letter from Mr McKelvie complaining that the school had not boen examined, by the Inspector since the present teacher had been appointed. — Inquiry to be made. Karere. .' ■ Application for a verandah to erected to the teacher's residence. — Held over until the Board is m funds. Bunnythorpe. Application for refund of £2 10s ex pended m internal alterations to school house. — Granted. . ; ' "■■' Truant Inspector. Mr Wagataff ' s report of truant m spection and, audit of several Committee's accounts during the past month was received. Owing to the vacation his work as Truant Inspector had been nil. . . Estimates. : The preparation of estimates of expenditure for the ensuing year was re-ferred-to the Finance Committee
