The Orient •«teamer John Elder took one hundred thousand sovereigns, and the Mirftipore three hundred thousand sovereigns for Australia. The Times says that England Bhould undertake the maritime defence of New Guinea if the colonies will become jointly responsible for the' cost of all operations on land. The Pall Mall G-azetto says that England having m reality invested Gordon Pasha with supremo authority m the Soudan, it is necessary that M. Baring should be given equal authority m matters of finance. Senor Cost el lo has formed a new Tory Ministry m Spain, the policy of which is unfavorable to the English treaty.
