The fine new building, the Empire -Hotel, prevented the spread of the flames m one direction, and the brick wail of Petersen, jeweller, m the Other. The heavy rain also assisted by ■extinguishing large flakes of burning 'material which fell on neighbouring roofs. The Fire Brigade worked hard for .t)iree hours. The damage'is estimated at about £10,000.
