(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) r Christchurch, January 20j ( i A fire occurred m High street on Saturday by whinh were destroyed the premises occupied by Alfred Simpson, bookseller ; Church, draper ; Delamore, grocer; and Smith, boot and shoe, maker. The fine new building, the Empire -Hotel, prevented the spread of the flames m one direction, and the brick wail of Petersen, jeweller, m the Other. The heavy rain also assisted by ■extinguishing large flakes of burning 'material which fell on neighbouring roofs. The Fire Brigade worked hard for .t)iree hours. The damage'is estimated at about £10,000.
