■ (united press association.) Auckland, January 14. The miners at Kawakawa coal mines who lately Btruck, have agreed to resume works on the terms offered by the manager. A dozen have left for Westport. Hellaby's slaughterhouse has been burned down. It was insured m the Sew Zealand for £300. There is sus-,| pected incendiarism. ! While Mr.-» Sharp, of Cambridge, was bathing m the Hokawhenua Creek with her daughter, aged four years, the latter was swept away and drowned. Epsom House Seminary, occupied by General Stoddard, was burned down. The origin of the fire is unknown. Gisboene, January 14. Mr A. Stevens' four-room ed house and contents, at Patutahi, were burned down last night during the obsenee of the family. An inquest will be held. New Plymouth, January 14. Dr Redwood laid the foundation stone of a conveut yesterday. A large concourse of persons were present. In his address he spoke strongly against the Government system of education, and said it was not consistent with what English neoplecalled fair play. He said the building would be a credit to the Catholics, and he hoped the children of the place would attend the school. The Bishop gave a subscription of £20, and a large amount was also placed on the stone. Wellington, January 14. The Supreme Court has been occupied the whole day m hearing the charge of arson preferred against a young man named Edward Mullen. The case for the Crown has not jet concluded, and 6 o'clock the jury were locked up for the night. The police have been unable to ascertain the whereabouts of one of the principal witnesses for the prosecution. The early colonists' celebration on anniversary day promises to be a great success. Sir William Fitzherbert will preside. The weather is very unseasonable. A large quantity of ruin fell yesterday. A man named Denis Evan is mis sing. He waß only discharged from the Luuntic Asylum recently, and it is feared he may have destroyed himself. The balance-sheet of the Working Men's Club for the half-year shows a credit balance of £38. The balance of assets over liabilities* is £567. The ship Hurunui sailed for London, this evening. At the Magistrate's Court, Garterton, the charge of rape preferred against a young man named F. Williams m\» dismissed. The medioal examination proved that the crime had not been committed. , Ihe steamer Koranui, with 1 60 ton** marble from Caswell Sounds arrived this atternoon. Christchurch, January 14. Lewis Stewart, a fisherman of Akaroa, is missing. He is supposed to have been drowned by the upsetting 1 of his boat m crossing A karoa harbour on Saturday. Tim abu, January 14. A man named Samuel Kirkpatrick was arrested yesterday on a charge of burglary at Waitoko. It is alleged that he broke into a house and stole a considerable sum of money. Dunedin, January 14, The annual Otago Bible Society meeting **ns held to-night. The report showed that the affairs were m an unsatisfactory state. The Governor was m the chair, and m his address stated that the Society during its last 20 years existence, had been instrumental m distributing 30,00&-copies of the Scrip- ! tures. Addresses were delivered by the Rev. Mr Barker, agent for the British and Foreign Bible Society, and others. The Rev. W. Uonaldson was elected p esident.
