A SAD CASE.
(Post.) An exceedingly aadlease came before the Wellington Resident Magistrate's Court on Saturday last, when a res-pectable-looking girl of 17, named Mary Barr, was brought up on a charge of soliciting prostitution last night. " The accused, who' appeared to fee?:her position keenly, admitted the offence. Sergeant Anderson stated that the case was a very painful one. The accused had only recently taken to the streets, and was rapidly descending m the social scale. On Tuesday laet she was fined for using obscene language, and last night Constablo O'Eourke discovered her on Lambton Quay importuning the passers-by. Her parents were respectable people m Wellington, but were unable to retain herat home. In reply to the Chairman, the sergeant mentioned that the accused was residing with seveial other girls m a house at Thorndon owned by a man named Ebden, who preferred to lease his premises to members of the unfortunate , class becau&e they paid him better than respectable people. The Court remarked that it was a shocking thing to see a young girl like the defendant m such a position, and imposed a penalty of 10s and costs; m default of payment to be imprisoned for 4.8 hours. „
