THE BROGDEN'S FAILURE.
Commenting on the failure of the Brogdens, the Auckland Star remarks : r-tjA. great portion; of the railways of, this colony was constructed by thon^, .a-ud, it will l?e ; seen from the cable message that the Brogdens. thrp^y- the chief onus of their insolvency upon thj? failure of their claims against the New Zealand Government,' '- yhifc is another way of spying that tho New Zealand contracts of the firm were iinremunerative, and this being so, the fact is a significant ?ora merit on certain charges of jobhery which .-were made when the contracts were entered into. \i tbfe Messrs Brogden are prepared to show that they lost heavily through their claims being rejected by our Government,, fchtey will effectually dispose of" those calumnious statements which were bandied about to the effect that ■ Sir Julius Yogel, on behalf of the Government, had made an agreement specially favorable to the contractors at the expense of the colonial taxhpayers. There* is, "m too many cases, reason rtobfil joy c thaij- Government contracts ate nice £tt Hobs*' for the fortunate contractors ; but m the. instance under consideration it' seems jSlain that people have at least got full value for their money. I* or is failure of Government contractors a unique experience; m New Zealand, and we '"have, thus strong" presumptive evidence, pf the honesty and zeal of the ' Executive m the matter of public, works. •
