Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) Suivant la verite. TUESDAY, JANUARY 8, 1884. LOCAL INDUSTRIES.
The following extract from the Share List and Investors Guide, published by Messrs Williamson and Co., eharebrokers, of Wellington, is peculiarly applicable just at present, and will no doubt be read with deep iuterest : " Local industrial companies have recently, and m a most remarkable manner, attracted the attention of all classes and capitalists. The success attending the establishment of numerous companies m the Wellington district has b en a special feature of the past twelve month?, and, inasmuch as provision has to be m.»de m connection with those for future payments, accounts probably for the seeming flatnoss observable m other directions. We cannot, therefore, upon the whole, record a great scarcity of money, nor evidence of special pressure, nor any lack of confidence m the community ; while a cheering feature is the fact that country districts, hitherto mostly borrowers, begin to come forward a3 investors. The unreasonable excitement m connection with tbe Terawhiti goldfield has deadend down, and left its inevitable deleterous effects. The evidence of unbaissed and experienced people tends, nevertheless, to prove that a good payable goldfield exists at the doors of Wellington, and the devel opment of which, we are glad to know, is proceeding m a healthy and more cautious manner. While we ref ret the temporary depression existing m the South Island, we have, considering the general aspect of affairs, nothing but congratulations to offer to our friend* and clients at the prospect* be fore us m our own portion of New Zealand."
