At the Supreme Court today the only case of interest was .the charge against Whirely ' of manslaughter, m having overlaid her child .whilst, drunk. She pleaded ,nqt guilty^ because ; she said site loved her chi^d ! and , never in-, tended to harm it. Being founcl guilty she asked l for mercy, aud whilst being senkence'd said she would reform. The Judge said lie thought the blame fell also upon the shoulders of her husband, who should have kept her from drink, and a "share '"'was attributable to those who had supplied her. He would give her such a sentence as might wean her from the craving for drink, namely, t\vetve months. James Smith, for stealing a hovse and a saddle, was sentenced to twelve months. Harry Punstan, for forgqry, was, sentenced to nrlne months; and Robert Galbtaith, for obtaining money by a valueless cheque, •was acquitted! . Dunedin, January 7. W. J. A verdict of accidental' death, was returned.
