The popular notion that the French peasantry are peculiarly prosperous and comfortable is somewhat disturbed by " statement made &t a recent public meet" ing, m Paris by M, Martin Nadaud, the , Drfputy for Crewse. The speike'- t'>ld his hearerd that, according to < ffiei»l statistics presented to tbe Freuch Chamber, there are no fewer than 140,000 houses m France unprovided with the elementary convenience of wiudows. *In these houses,' he went on to shy, ' which have no other flooring than the soil, whicn' are without chimneys and without luhi, whose families live with ihtJ domestic animals for compauion* and with tbe pig aa a guest.'
