A serious difficulty has arisen m conne.Qtipn .with the driving of sheep through an infected district,- and the Government have been asked to relax the stringency: of the Slieep Act as applied to puiticular circumstances. The Gear. Meat Company • purchased about 5000 sheep m tho Napier district, intending to drive them overland to this port for slaughter and freezing, but the local inspector refused to grant permits for driving the sheep through certiin. intervening runs m the Ariteo district, these being infected with scab. The company offered to u&e all precaution against the possible spread, of infection. They: also obtained the assistance of Mr Levin and -Mr W. C. Buchanan, iriembers for the city arid district, who iv terviewed the Goveinihent specially with the object of getting the icstiic tions relaxed. Two sheep-inspectors had been instructed by the Government to report on i lie matter, and the result of the formal conference was that the Government refused any concession ; ■as- being inexpedient m the cii'cumstances.
