Thomas Brown, charged with deserting his wife and fivo children, was ordered to contribute £L a week to their support. Roland John Bates was charged with deserting bis boy by leaving him at a boarding house without payment. He was ordered to pay 10s a week. The Salvauon Army m Melbourne have resolved to enter upon a new aud im« portant field of effort, namely, to give a h'lping Land to prieouers on discharge from the Melbourne Gaol, upon t he sole condition that they desire to live honest, sober, and reformed lives. The proposal is to establish a home, or retreat, tor the objects referred to,nnder proper and experienced supervision, to give the discharged prisoners anwther chance. The deceased lady arrived m the colony per the ship Blenheim m the year 1840, and for thirty-three years she had been a resident of the Hutt district where she was highly respected. The Boroujh cart was today employed removing some of the accumulations of dirt that some of the residents of the Square, despairing of its removal, had collected into heaps m front of their premises so as to allow foot-passenger traffic to get to their doors. It is to be hoped some better system of cleansing the waterways m the Pquare will soon come info vogue and be systematically carried out. Mrs Scott Siddons has been staying at Berlin for the last few days, and the newspapers speak of her intention to ' make a starring tour through oienrmny.'
