McDermot, who was shot by Jones, the manager of the Onehunga irons>imj> works, m consequence of a quarrel over a game of carttai is m a very critical condition. Dr Scott, who attended the patient immediately after the shooting, says there are two wounds ; one is not serious. The bullet passed through the left thigh from , side to side, through the flesh, but did not touch the bone, and did not remain lodged. The other bullet entered near the centre of the back bone, and came out under the left arm-pit. It ap pears to have entered the cavity of the chest, and does not appear to have injured the long. The symptoms are such as to make the case serious and doubtful as to recovery, but it is not absolutely certain to prove fatal. Wm. Henry Jones, the prisoner now m custody, 'has beeu m the colony from 12 to 18 months. He was engaged m America to take the management of tho smelting works to convert the ironsand of the West Coast into iron, by a company formed for that purpose. He is a man about 40 years of age, medium height and build ; an Englishman by birth, being a native of one of the Midland counties, but has spent the greater portion of his life m the United States. Since his auival m New Zealand he married the daughter of Mr Blukely, J.P., ex-Mayor of Onehunga, He was generally liked, although occasionally of quick temper < Tt is thought he must have been grossly insulted and provoked. McDermott is a young man, 30 years of age, a native of Onehunga, and the son of a pensioner. Ho is a labourer, and resides with his parents on the outskirts of Onehunga. He seems to have had the best of the first quarrel with Jones. Later. "W". H. Jones was brought up at the Onehunga Police Court this morning, charged with shooting, with intent, to kill, John McDermott. He appeared downcast, aud his eye was much confuted. Superintendent Thompson said that McDermott was m a critical condition, and applied for a remand for eight days. The prisoner applied for bail, but the Magistrate said that he could not grant it. He was remanded accordingly.
