" ( Well t " said he,." since j the lavt smash, when we had to ask the loan of tho Standard machine, the boss J won't allow us to go tliau ,400 an hour. He is afraid the Standard wouldn't lend him their machine again." "And J. suppose it takes you a long time to work off your big circulation." "Oh no," replied the lad, evidently ofiVhis guard, "we can rattle off the whole lot m 2Q minutes when the boss is not about, or m half an hour if he is there." ";Why, then you are only printing about 200 papers instead* of the thousands your boss gasses about. There must be -.an. almighty tall fib o knockj(ng < c | ih = o.tit somewhere." And here comes the oream of the joke. The youth saw he -had been let down a Uttle, and trying to brazen it out, said flippantly, *.i Why how long does he say it takes to print the issue ?" Well he says his machine prints thousands un hour, and it takes hours to print it all off. ;" Oh, I'll tell you what' he means. We print the outside of the paper only twice- a, week, that is three days issue each time, and it takes over an hour to work them all- off when there's three days together, 1 can tell you." "My lad," solemnly roplied his interrogator, I ." I am the old copy line I used to ; Tvrite is very true, that evil communications'corrupt good manners." " V?ell I don't know. It. is just what I hear the boss say. My word, you ought to hear him skite about our circulation When .somebody wants an ad vertisemenfc m. ■ One time after he'd done a good stiff blow, I saw theother fellow look him straight m the face, and^ thinkg I to 'myself, now he knows the boss is telling a whopper. ''Bufc bless ye, it's' not easy taking our boss aback." We can quite believe it..
