ANOTHER SUBMARINE CABLE.
(BY BLEOrRIO TRLBQRAPH. — COPYRIGHT.) (ttBDTERS TBLKGIAMS) Sydney, Dec. 10. The following is the substance of a scheme which has been proposed by the Postmasier-General for laying a .submarine telegraph cable between Awstialia and America, alternative routes suggested. According to the first of these, the line would be laid via' New Caledonia, Fiji, and Honolulu, with a total length of GBSB knots. Tho estimated cost for the line by this route *onld be £2,000,000. If the alternative route l>e followed, the cable will be^ taken from Auckland, the length being thus reduced to 6500 knots, aud the estimated cost £1,950,000. In this case, however, the existing Eaßtern Extension Company's cable from Nelson to Botany Bay must be added to, and the estimated cost m to be defrayed by the colonies jointly upon: the basis of population. The share of New Zealand j would thus be £360,000. Communications with reference to the scheme will be addressed to the Near Zealand Government.
