POWDER EXPLOSION.
'■ The explosion at Owake Powder Mills (says the Dunedin Herald) has been much less serious than was at first feared from the telegraphic news receivefl: The accident happened at 4 p.!iironthe 29th of November. To make the risk as small as possible, the works are divided among eight detached buildings, one of which was the incorporating rootn Where the explosion occurred. There were no m n permanently engaged m it, a? it was only necessary to visit it from time to time to see that the machineray was working properly, and to moisten the" charge, which had been done about twenty minutes before. One Charge only, consisting of about 50lbs of powder, was m the room. Although the amount of powder was so small, the noise and shock caused by the explosion were very great. The building itself, which was of wood, was blowu to matchwood. The machinery which was m it is very heavy, and the greater part is, fortunately little injured. The work of the mills is still going on, and it is hoped that all the damage Will bo repaired m about three weeks. It is believed that the cause of the explosion was a spark from a fire m the tush at some dktauce, the wind blowing from that direction at the time.
