Commenting on the annexation of New Guinea, the Morning Post is confident that such a step will be taken. The latest news from Tonquin is to the eflvct that M Ferry has demanded the evacuation of Soutay and Bacninh. Information has been received from Madagascar stating that a great deal of sickness prevails amongst the French troops stationed at Tamalave. At tli e opening of the Calcutta Exhibition His Excellency the Marquis of Ripon expressed a hope that the Exhibition would tend to promote the establishment of a large trade between India and Australia. The weather was wet, and the ceremony generally proved a failure. Transports capable of embarking 12,000 troops have been ordered by the French Admiralty to rendezvous at Algeria. The Chinese Admiral bas notified foreigners m Canton that war is imminent, and has warned them to preserve strict neutrality. The chief* on tho British reserve m Z-.tltiland are clamoring for Cetewayo's removal. All the tribes of the Southern Soudan have now risen m rebellion. Mr W. A. Long, the well-known colonial sporting man, has offered to back Trickett, Edwards, and Rush against Hanlon for £1000 a-sid«.
