Colonel" Burns bought the icalf from an Indiana farmer, who was driving the split-foot trotter in a sulky, dnd beating all ordinary roadsters with ease. The calfs wind and limbs arc perfectly sound, and his owner says he has diiven 40 miles a day without making him turn a hair. To show the ! call's speed he was saddled and mounted by 1 - a 1151b jockey, and Mr Honon's bay mare, Glbrindaj with a record of 2.24 was started against him. Clorinda went awayan the lead when the word ' go' was given ; but Reilly, the jockey onthe calf, quickly clapped spui-s intbr his sides, and, with Hibell^w jtbat was heard a mile off, Wabash hoisted his tail like a jack-ptafE and .set sail after < the trotter: ' The crowd of horsemen present at i orice J Bay that Wabash had,.- a mixed but fast' gait that is peculiar to , himself. '"When ; oh the back stretch his leg* seem to 'spangle' out on all. sides at and he bowed his back like _a Jbjroncho.And blew-r^a cloud of steam out, of his, nostrils. Colonel Burnjt^prdudty watedimhand towards him and said cto the crowd on.the'j quarte£str6tJelf V* 'Now,' you watclAhat critter hump himself,'-' If * humping' mealnt bellowing until the-aatounded Clorihdsf bolted across the. track and stood trembling lagainst tj(e outside rails, WabaStt ' certainly whaii the Colouel expected. Wabash came along , like a locomotive, passed the timorous .mare, and was looping into the home styeCch before timorous Clorinda's driver could induce her to trot. Wa,bash won by an eighth of a mile, and was cheered by every spectator except Mr Hprton, who rhythmically said to tis 4river^ Well, don't it bieat-^ T
