THE PRICE OF BREAD.
(Post.) "We cordially . agree with "Householder," whose letter appears m another column, that it will be, to say the least, injudicious of the bakers of Wellington it they act on their resolution to raise the price of bread. Our correspondent seems to overlook the fact that by the new Act bakers are cpnipel led not 'only to give proper weight, but also to s>tamp each loaf. This will, of course, be some additional trouble ; but surely not enough to- j'.stify the proposed increase m the price. It is not so very long ago, if we mistake not, that the price of broad was laised, and at present; it is dear enough m all conscience. Any further increase will press hardly on the working classes, and will probably be resented by consumers generally. The; most inexplicable feature aboutthe conduct of the bakers a])poars to be their .determination to make their cash customers bear all the brunt of the increase. These, we believe it will be found, are very largely composed of the labouring classes; who are least able lo bear any advance m prices. The bakers, will do well to reconsider a resolution which was probably passed m a fit of irritation with the new Act, and still more, perhaps, with the refusal of the Government to explain iis provisions.
