The 24 hours' walking contest between Scott and Edwards concluded at 10 o'clock last night, Edwards being declared the winner by one lap (80 ■yards.) Shortly after the start on Fri- ; day evening Ecfwards assumed the lead jby about 400 yards, and he held this i until 6 o'clock on Saturday morning when he retired from the track. Scott previous to this, had been off the' track, but for very short intervals. At 6.20 a.m. Edwards returned, and the register was :— Scott, 40 miles 6 laps ; Edwards, 40 miles; The positions .were unaltered at 8.5 this morning, '. when both pedestrians left the track for nine minutes. The men were walking m grand style, and when half the time was up Scott had covered 58 miles 9 laps, and Edwards 56 miles 20 laps. At noon Edwards went off the track again for 20 minutes, and Scott had a spell of the same duration at one o'clock. The ■w-hole afternoon both were walking strong, and at 3 p.m. Scott had a lead of exactly a mile. He maintained this lead until near 6 p.m.. when Edwards spurted an 4 reduced it by 4 laps. At 8.30 Scott was still ahead by half-a-mile, but Edwards, by succesive spurts gradually overhauled him, and won by a lap, the distance being :— Edwards, ilO miles 16 laps; Scott, 110 miles 15 laps. The latter part of the match was very exciting. Throughout the day the attendance was by no means large, as all the sporting people were away at the races, but from 8 to 10 the building was crowded about 600 ' being present. A few minutes after the conclusion Edwards thanked the public for their attendance and also for the treatment he and Scott had received. He complimented Scott on the way m which he walked, and said it was the first time he had beaten Scott over his (Scott's) own distance Scott also thanked those present. The 48 hours' contest will start next Thursday evening.
