The betting market is quiefe. The latest quotations are : — For the Derby — Archie, even money ; Off Color has been backed at 3 to 1, but 4to 1 is now wanted about him; Martini-Henry, 100 to 20 (offered) j Saidius, 7 to 1 ; Signor, 100 to 8 (offered). For the Cap— Calrua, 7to 1 ; from 100 to 9 has been offered about First Demon, but 100 to Bis taken ; Aide-de-Camp and Le Grand, 100 to 6 (taken), Despot and Nicholas, 100 to 6 (offered) ; Claptrap, Sardius, Pollio, Signor, and First Water, 100 to 5 (taken). The last two are backed m thousands. The weather is bad for work on the course, and nothing important has been done to-day. Le Grand has, the past day or two, been doing good work. Lesbia, notwithstanding the bad weather, did a serviceable gallop. Magnet and Fryingpan also went twice round splendidly. Santa Claus was brought on the course, and did useful work. Archie and the Drummer were sent along for a mile and a half, the former finished strongly, and did the best which has as yet been done by the Derby horses on the tan. Hurricane and Kathleen Mavourneen went twice round together. Sardius went once round the course, and came home fairly well. Calma did a gallop at threequarters pace, and this horse is said to have done the best gallop on the tan among horses engaged m the Cup. Pollio was sent twice round, and finished well Off Color is now freely backed for the Derby at 3 to 1. . .i Melbourne, November 1. " Augur" gives the following eleven as probable starters for the Derby : — Archie, Hurricane, Ike, Kingsdale, Little Sister, Martini-Henri, Napier, Off Color, Sardius, Signor, Vernet. The Cup tips are as follows by "Augur" :— Nicholas or Despot. "Asmodeus" tips Stockwell. The following w*B the betting at midnight:— Maribyrnong Plate: Helene 4to 1, Garfield s "to 1, Second King 8 to 1, Kings Own 8 to 1, Honey dew 10 to 1. Derby : Archie even, Off Color 3to 1, Martini- id enry 6to 1, Sardius, 7 to 1, Signor 10 to 1. Cup: Calma 8 to 1, First Demon 11 to 1, Aide de Camp 12 to 1, Legrand 14 to 1, .Nicholas 14 to 1, First Water 20 to 1, Magnet 20 to 1. The weather has been wet for some time, and still continues very unsettled. ■ The police have commenced proceedings against other sweep promoters. • " Asmodeus 1 ' tips : Archie, Off Color, and Sardius, for Derby.-^-" Augur " tips :. Archie, Martini-Henry, and Uff Color. " Asmodeus" gives the following eight horses as probable starters for the Derby :- Archie, Hurricane, Mar-tini-Henry-, Napier, Off Color, tardius, Sigaor, Vernet.
