A lawyer, the junior partner ,of a wellknown local firm, was riding m from Woodville when he met a resident of Ashnrst, a storekeeper. Quoth the man of law, pulling up his horse, " "Well Mr N. did you pay that amount as you promised r" "No Mr B. I-filed instead." The look of blank amaze, ment that overspread the lawyer's countenatiba was a study for a physiognomist. After he had somewhat recovered himself, he ejaculated angrily, "Then you told me a deliberate lie, sir;" "Well," said the other nonchalantly, 'ftheye was qp help fppit ana I h.ad to T^e lawyer again found vent fqr his surcharged feelings, and repeated his charge of a deliberate lie. N. now rose equal to the occasion, and standing up iv his trap, preparatory to getting out into the road, and unbuttoning his coat, he challenged the ma# of Jaw to mortal combat with fisticuffs. T^e situation here became interesting, but th,e pugnacious storekeeper could no longer contain his merriment, and buißtins: into a Hearty laugh, said, ''It's all right Mr 8., ypull find the money when you get to town. I paid it all right. I was only taking a quiet rjse out qf you."
