FATAL ACCIDENT.

This morning a man working at bushfalling on the property of Mr John Manson in Kairanga, met with a very severe accident, which it is feared may terminate fatally. His name is James Smith, he is unmarried, and hails from Auckland, having no relatives in this district. He and his mates were at work not far from each other, when a tree which had first been fallen glanced off a sapling which stood near and came down on poor Smith, crushing him to the ground and causing very serious injuries to the spine, and also internally. A messenger was despatched to town for assistance, but unfortunately both the constable and doctor were absent in Wanganui, having been subpoenaed in cases before the Supreme Court. Mr Hautain recommended that the injured man should be brought into town, and a telegram was sent to Inspector James, acquainting him of the occurrence. It is probably he would request Dr. Johnston, of Fielding [Feilding], to attend professionally upon the sufferer. [Since the above was in type, we learn that Smith has succumbed to the injuries he received.]
