SUSPECTED MURDER.

Arrested on Suspicion. (BY TELEGRAPH.) (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch, October 21. Durham, a well-known boatman of Lyttelton was found strangled in hishouse this morning. James Angus has been arrested on the charge of murder. Deceased was an elderly man whose wife and family left Lyttelton for Sydney about four months ago. Since then he has been, it is said, keeping house with Angus in Saul's gully off London-street. He was of intemperate habits, and it is supposed that intemperance has occasioned the murder. Particulars have not yet been received from the p ort. We learn that Mr Montague has been very successful in several contracts he lately undertook to drive for water in different places. He drove two pipes for Mr Carroll in different parts of his Kairanga property, in each case obtaining an ample supply at a shallow depth. It is the opinion of those who undertook the contract that artesian wells would prove successful experiments, and it is to be hoped that the final result will be benefical to the w hole district. We understand that Mr Montague's contract prices for sinking are exceedingly reasonable. We learn that he prospects of the Woodville Examiner are srtisfactory that it is probable the paper will be issued triweekly from and after the new year. Some of the residents are so enthusiastic over its success that they predict a daily issue within twelve months. They are very proud of their local journal, and are giving it v ery liberal support all over the district. The Electric Circus, whose posters have been displayed on the walls and hoardings of the town for some time past, has an advertisement elsewhere setting forth the date of opening. Elsewhere the performance has been most successful, and has drawn crowded houses. The Gorge was very rough travelling on Friday night. The wind was blowing a gale half way through, though calm at Palmerston and Woodville. A large tree had fallen, and a number of slips had taken place. Riding through was dangerous work both for man and horse. Peebles' waggon crossed the Lower Ferry this morning, but found a heavy deposit of sand on the Ashurst side, which was fearfully heavy pulling for the horses. A further call of ten shillings per share has been made on the capital of the Palmerston Brewery Company, and is payable on the 12th prox. Bishop Hadfield preached an able sermon last night to a large congregation against Evolution, taking as his text " Oh Lord how manifold are thy works." The firm of George Dinsdale & Co., as been dissolved, the name of the firm how being George & Co. Messrs J. & C. Bull are inviting tenders for various descriptions of baulk timber, &c. Particulars will be found in advertisement.
