A STRANGE STORY.

(by telegraph.) (united [pbess assoccticht.) Chbistchurch, October 17. . A singular instance of loss of memory has just come to light here. A Norwegian labourer states that m 1866 he obtained at Q-reymouth a draft on a Christchurch bank for £750. At Christchurch he presented the draft and asked for gold, as he was going to Europe, He was reccommended to take a draft on the London Head uflioe and adopting the recommendation he received two drafts, amounting to £750 m, London. He went to Dunedin where he changed his mind as to going Home. At the fire m the Octagon m 1867, while saving at some peril the life of a woman, he lost the draft, and seems to have subsequently forgotten that they ever, existed. He Vemaimtd m the colony,' "working i hard, and amassed more money. Again ; he determined to visit Europe, but was ; prevented from carrying out his in-! tention , by the loss of £1150 atj Oamaru. The loss restored to him the! memory of his former preparations for| a hemeward voyage, and, after 'l6 years,* he set about to recover the £750. Un-I fortunately he cannot remember the bank from which the drafts were ob-; tamed. Mr Wickes, mining, agent, to ! whom he' applied, remembers that mi 1866 the New Zealand, the New South' "Wales,: and • the XTnion..: Banks had; branches at Greymouth, and as it ia stated that the New Zealand had no head office m London, and the other' two banks had, the enquiry is nar-! rowed 'down to these. The case is cer-i tainly remarkable.
