Borough Council.

From Messrs Steven's arid " Gorton .; seeking permission to erect a fence on sections 286 and'2B7 which was granted without discussion. From Mr Park requesting permission to erect a boat-shed on the West side of the river, about 100 yards above the bridge. — The application was granted on the understanding that the applicant would be bound to remove the same, after one month's notice from the Council, and that the mode of erection be* approved of by the Reserves Committee. Jfcom the Secretary of the ; Fire Brigade applying for the sum of £80 voted by the Council for the purposes of protection from fire. — It was resolved on motion of Cr Linton, seconded by Cr Leary, " That the amount be paid as soon as the sum is available," From Mr Dundas, the Government Engineer, , t applying for 40 concrete blocks, to be used m the' survey ofthe township. — In .explanation the Mayor stated ifcbat the object of the Government m making this survey was with a view of rectifying any former errors. The blocks would cost. ls 6d each. The matter* was left; for the Mayor and 'Engineer. : '" "" labbikinism. Cr Snelson called the attention of the Council to thedatnaged state ofthe windows of the Hospital and other private properties, caused by lads m the township. A long discussion ensued, resulting m the adoption of the following motion :— " That a-ieward of £1 be offered to any pe r son who will give such information as will lead to the conviction of any parties pulling down fences or otherwise destroying property, ■ and that the constable be communicated with oh the matter/ CHABITABLE AID COMMITTEE. The Mayor suggested-that a Charitable Aid Commitee be formed, : Cr Ferguson proposed that the following gentlemen form a Charitable Aid Committee, viz :— Ors Snelson, Walker, and. the Mayor. " He ' knew little of Mr Snelson's capabilities m this respect, but Mrs Snelson was a host m herself. ': The resolution was duly seconded and carried. y . At * l^ter stage .of the meeting, , it was resolved, op the mqtiou of Cf TFergqson, seconded oy Pr Perkins, to authorise the Committee to expend what sum they deemed necessary. The matter of providing for the Ross family was also left to the newly eleoted Committee. WATEB SUPPLY, The Committee appointed to con? sider the request of the Fire Brigade to drive stand pipes m the Square, brought up their report. They reported they could not recommend stand pipes and suggested that arrangements be be made with owners of property to deepen their wells.

Cr Leary proposed and Cr Snelson seconded the adoption of the report. Cr. West regretted the tone of the report, as he believed the system of stand-pipes was a success m Greymoth. The' Mayor said that there would be np objection to the, Brigade testing the effecacy of ay stand-pipe^ if thej&so desired. ' ' v j The report, after^a short discussion was adopted. INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES. * ■' The Inspector of Nuisance reported that a hole for the placing of ni^ht-soil at the back of Gillett's was a nuisance. His report was adopted. I accounts. . Cr Ferguson explained that he was unable ttf procure a suitable fountain m this or the neighbouring colonies, but had to send floine for the article. He Would communicate about it at ouee. NEW BY-LAWS. Doubts having been expressed by several Councillors as to whether it would be legal to pass the by-laws 're chimneys, Cr Perkins proposed the following resolution, which was seconded by Cr Ferguson and adopted :— « That the consideration of the by-laws be postponed until next meeting, and m . :the ' meanwhile the opinion of the Borough Solicitor be obtained, and if he is of opinion that sufficient' notice had not been' given the Clerk Waiver* „ tise the By-Law." The Council then adjourned.
