A lot of 54 fat steers sold at £5 12s 6d and £5 15s : young cattle sold fairly well at the hammer, but old cows fetched low prices ; sheep sold freely. The National Mortgage and Agency Company have received returns of clients' sheep shipped per s.s. Fenstanton on her firsf voyage, showing on 1492 sheep a net return of 3d per lb at Port Chalmers, after 1 paying all freight, shipping expenses, and commission* Allowing*' about another Id per Ib for skins and fat, the result is very good compared with pre* sent values ruling m tbis market. Captain Webb, the famous swiminerj failed it is|saidj|to succeed as a commander of British merchantmen for the, reason that he got such a reputation, for running desperate -risks that no sailors could be found to ship with. him. The owners of the vessels while he was m command never sustained a ; loss, v and he always .made a quick passage, but no sailor who sailed with him once would go a second time. : The Bench at the Wanganui ■ Police Court was occupied by N. E. Liffiton, Esq., J.P., yestorday. The only culprit to interview him was the irrepressible Julia MoGonagle, who was brought up on a charge of drunkenness. The same lady (says the Herald) also came before the Bench yesterday for a similar offence, and was fined and, ih consequence, Hiß Worship imposed a fine ef 10s.. or 48 hours' imprisonment. When the decision of the Bench was made known to her, she said, with true, dramatio erqphasis, ''* Oh, Sangent, Sarrgent; look after me cheiid. ■■■.. 7 , . a*-. . *
