Racing Sweepstakes.
The way m which the guileless public are swindled by the organisers of public sweeps on races has been the subject of a good deal of newspaper corresEondence m Melbourne lately. A otel-keeper at Mundi Mundi subscribed £1 to a sweep advertised freely m Australian and New Zealand newspapers, by '• Bonanza," of Melbourne, qn the Australian Cup. He drew Willeroo, wh.o ran' second, and the drawer became entitled to £10Q, less 10 per cent, ?t Bonanza" wrote the drawer, " please find cheque for £90 enclosed," and congratulate him on his luok. The letter came to hand, but there was no oheque, and the correspondence whioh follows tends to show that no such was ever drawn or posted to him. When threatened with exr posure, " Bonanza" coolly wrote that this would prove a good advertisement, as it would show that the drawing pf his sweep was genuine. The sweep nuisance has increased to such a pitch m Melbourne that the Legislature are taking steps to stamp them out altogether, and it seems high time some action was taken, for the public are being continually taken mby men of the " Bonanza" class.
