The police, finding that Richard Corbett, a bookmaker (sic); the Bshk caretaker's son^ could not be found,prosecuted inquiries, The caretaker's family declared he was living m Sydney, whither a telegram J was desp itched. A reply was. received th*t he had bean gone to New Zealand *a fortnight. The police,. however, ,dis: covered that' he bad been seen at ,Mejr bourne a few days, ago and subsequent^ traced him to Meagher's f hotel , ' S|nd - $ hurst, where he had been living~for fen days under the name of Clinton. The police found Corbett m an hotel parlour. He denied all knowledge ol the robbery. Upbn ; taking him upsfrura, however, three bars of gold were found m his coat pocket, together with forty-one pounds m notes, thirty^iiiae m gold, and thirtytwo m silver; also a loaded revolver. Corbett thereupon confessed that he had duplicate keys made years ago for all the safes m the Commercial Bank He watched his opportunity and entered by the f rout, door. When Pinnock, the Ballarat managar, arrived with the, sold, lie concealed himself. The robbery was effected during the night, snd he made his : escape m the morning. He declared that he had planted the balance ot the plunder m a swamp, but . upon being taken there no signs of gold could be seen. It is certain that Corbett was the, thief who stole £1000 which was missed from the same bank two years ago, he having at that time, declared that he had won JBIOOO m a sweep. It appears that one of his sisters knew he was m Melbourne. The police are can*, fident that they- will now be able to recover the missing bars.
