; We hear that Mr H. S. Palmersori will shortly commence the survey of a new road between Wairarapa and Palmerston. via Fitzberbert, which, it is said will shorten the actual distance by some 23 miles. Vt c are requested to intimate through our local columns that a peneral meetinsr of the Palmerston North Choral Society will be hold m the Foresters' Hall this evening at 7. 30 p.m. ' The Oroua County Council is inviting tenders for repairing three bridges on the Bunnytborpe Road. There was a short sitting of the District Court on Saturday, before Judge Hardcastle, when an order of discharge was granted to J. H. Oopp, of Foxton, on the application of his debtor's solicitors, . Jffessrs'Hankins and Baker. - -It will be' rempmbered 'that a 'woman named Phosbe Yeitch was convicted at Wanganui a few months ago of a child murder and sentenced to death, but after • wards reapited on a verdict' of a jury of matrons that she' was.' enceinte. The, prisoner 'vas safely delivered of a child m Wellington Gaol on Friday, night. . ■ t About 1500 shares, have now been taken up m the West Coast Meat Export Company, and the floating of the company, may now be considered a certainty. The matter haß been enthusiastically taken up by the. Patea .settlors, and a plant will shortly be ordered, and the . necessary arrangements made for shipping to Wellington. It is stated that while Messrs Redmond and Walsh were m Wellington they were, handed a cheque for £300. The name of the donor has 'been wil hheld. They expect lo return to Wellington m about three weeks' time. Their stay ia the colour « I limited, as they wish to be m Melbourne early m November neit to attend a convention ther*. ; . -r ■■:,<■■. | I It is remarkable that a disease like lepi rosy should flourish m Norway.! From the returns just, published this .appears, however, to be the case, although the number afflicted is decreasing At the end:df 1875 there were^.2ooß patients re« ported, m the country. At the end of 1880 -the number had fallen to 1582. The disease is stated to be due to the consumption'of food 'in ah unwholesome condition, particularly fish, and also to uncleanli* ness. ■■;• \. . ■ , The, following paragraph is from the Bolton Daily Chronicle (County of Kent) of Jane 11-:—' Fifty years ago a Mr Coe» tello left Ireland for Australia, afterwards settling down at Auckland, New Zealand, vr here he died recently leaving £100,000. to local charities. His only surviving {brother, who resides at Bolton, is 75 years of age and past work. He is now taking steps to prove his relationship to his more fortunate , brother, with whom he has had no communication since they left Ireland.' 1 An incident m some respects resembling one m the history of New Zealand is re* ported from Wick. The ship Abeone, from Dundee to Calcutta with coal, called m at Wick, and sent word bn shore that ativ. number of .cats would be taken at 5s per head. The feline population of Wick, as of all fishing towns, being large, the boys soon secured a good many cats, and dnly got the money for them. It is stated that the demand for cats m India is such that the Dundee Whittingtons are likely to make a pound or two of profit on each animal-landed alive. . The latest rumour concerning the repra* sentation of New Zealand at the Sydney Annexation Conference is that, as the Premier cannot conveniently go, his next m command, the Colonial Treasurer, who is also leader of the Lower House, may probably go m his stead. A telegram has been received by the Government that a number of natives at Kawhla have destroyed the buoys recently placed by the Hinemoa to mark the entrance of the harbour and also the chan* nel. The natives looted the store there, and ordered the storekeeper to clear out.
