A Magnificent Sight.

THE ERUPTION IN THE STRAIT 3OF SUNDA.

The Brisbane Courier of : July 25 gives a graphic account of the outburst, Contributed by one of the officers of the B.s. AliHora, which bad just arrived l atthat port. He says:-" It was on the ialaudOf -akatora, at the entrance of the Straits bf Sunda, and one «»«"* cent bla_e of light.was proceeding frcm. it. height. Higher and higher tho blaze seamed to mount as we drew closer to its base; while the sound bad now become one continuous roar, Vke hundreds: ot blasts from^ some mighty furnace, and a volume of black smoke extended for mileß from «, like a funeral nil* As we* passed through, some of the* fine dust and strong sulphurous fumes of the subterranean upheaval got into our eyes, and filled our .throats, causing us to keep under the »wning. tm we passed-^glad to leave, the island on our lee. We-cOuld then admire its ißDlendid upheaval and listen to its Sty^aiwithoutfear. Ihere seemed to be a strange vibration m the water -and ship while we were passing. Ihe flames looked grand, as leaping high into the neavens with a mighty roar , they .ent their sulphurous fumes 'W^tty miles upward, and then dying out till £ey seemed expended, would^leap up Sth renewed force and fu.y. This continued till the ship took us farther and farther away, the sound «o^weak^, and tueiigbt soon, appealed, like a lighthouse on tne shore. We passed about three or four miles from it and had the 1 wihd been blowing from the southward, Tdtie say we should have felt some considerable annoyance from it. . As it *__itonly gare us a grand volcanio will never be forgotten."
