James Carey's Assassin.
Mr R, D'Orsay Qgden, .the comedian, has supplied the Gulgong (South Australia papers) with some information respecting O'Donneil, wrhichmay prove of interest to our' readers. Mr Ogden, who is himaeU a native of the Southern States ot America, says that he knew O'Donneil intimately during the insurrectionary waran -that country. At that time O'Donneil was a lieutenant m the Confederate, army,., and served m the Provost - Marshal's department under General Winder m Richmond, Virginia. fle was a man. of undoubted courage, and of lax principles; the latter, he thinks, werejbccasioned more from his dissipated habits and love of drink than from any inherent viciousness. After the war he went to Texas, where he fell lower and lower, until at length he found companionship amongst the guerilla and bushwhackers—the horse and cattle-lifters that infested that part of the country. O'Donneil afterwards made his way to New York, a man of desparate fortunes, and there joined the Fenian organisation, entering into the spirit of the cause with all the impulsiveness and fervour of his Hibernian nature. While serving m the army he was generally. in hot water with his brother officers. Mr Ogden was lieuten-ant-colonel m a Virginian cavalry re* giment Jwhen he made O'Donnell's acquaintance. |from his knowledge of the organisation, he has not a shadow of doubt that its emissaries will within twelve months take the lives of all the informers who gave evidence against their fellows m the late trial; that O'Donneil is not a man who would commit a murder stealthily or feel any remorse at taking life m such a cause ; on the contrary, he would glory m the sanguinary act and boast of his intention to commit the crime before perpetrating the deed. He would look upon it, first as a duty to observe his oath, and as an act of high patrotism to become the #T«nger.
