Members' Wives.
In the House on Thursday, Hon. Major Atkinson said that, m order to equalise th* facility given to Northern membars, of bringing their wives m the Government steamer, and m order to remove a difficulty as to payment, he moved that the members of the Assembly and their wives, living core than three miles from Wellington, should receive the actual fare by coach, railway or steamboat, once each way to anil lrom Wellington. If a member were a widower, and his eldest daughter kept bis house, she would come within resolution. .Mr Seddon moved that' 1 aunts, cousins, and servants," be added. (Laughter.) A prominent member of the Opposition side suggested that those who did not bring their wives at the public expense should be paid so much on each as, an equivalent. Speaker regarded tho amendment as a practical joke, and refused to put ib to the vote. Mr Seddon responded by moving " That wives be struck oat." (More laughter.) Motion put as proposed by the Trea-. surer, and Mr Seddon divided the House against it — Ayes, 26 ; noes, 15 ; motion carried.
