A Destructive Bird.
.-. — o "As many people may wonder Why so much fuss is made about the. Kea parrot—to the! extent even of bringing it before the bar of the Legislative Council recently — it- may be worth while to BZplain that this bird rivals the rabbit m certain Southern, mountainous districts as an • anti-wool»producing agent . It does no* starve out the sheep as the rabbits do, but proceeds by the more direct process of pouncing upon- the back of the sheep or lamb, and digging out its inside works while the unfortunate animal is alive, but helpless to resist. Death, of courpe, ultimately ensues, and m this way there has been an enormous destruction of stock m tbe Otago interior. The Kea is a gigantic greenish-bronze parrot, possessing enormous strength of beak and talon, and as formidable as a small eagle.
