The result of the Waste Lands Board circular to the deferred -payment selectors m arrears, has been the payment within a month of £3000, or more than half of the amount due. Christchurch, August 30. The Waste Lands Board to-day granted 19 gold-prospecting licenses tor the MaJvern District, and one license to prospect for copper and tin m Alford Forest. At the Temperance Conference about 80 were present. Resolutions were passed m favour of forming an association for political action, to be called the Canterbury Temperance Union. j Gbeymouth, August 30. j One of the Oxford's immigrants, brought here by the Grafton, is isolated I m the immigration barracks with his sister. He has been Very ill, but it is said his condition is now improving, Auckland, August 31. A scene occurred m the police court yesterday. A ra'-he* notorious. woman named Anne Vesey was charged with abusive language. While the principal witness, a woman, was giving her evidence, the prisoner drew a saucer from the folds of her dress, apd struck the witness twice violently on the head, covering her with blood. The Court sentenced the prisoner to two months' imprisonment.
