From a Southern exchange we observe that the works at the Oamaru Woollen Manufactory are about completed, and it is expected that the machinery will be sot a-rfft>ing and aotual work commenced m a few days. About 50 hands will be employed at the outset, bat it is anticipated that the number will soon be doubled. The Mail says :— At the start the salary list will reach fally £100 per week, and when account ib j taken of the other directions ia which j money drawn chiefly from outside will be circulated, the fact will be recognised that the factory will instil some life into the commerce and trade of Oamaru." When can it be said that the prosH pects of the establishment of a woollen factory m Manawatu wear an encouraging aspect J What & different state of thinge there would be m this district had we one or two factories m existence 1 That such an enterprise could ba worked remuneratively no one ventures to dispute, bat the difficulty seems to be to get the undertaking launohed. -When woollen factories are working profitably all over the country, perhaps Manawatu will awake from its , lethargy, and combine to establish one ia the district. Meantime, precious time and opportunity are being lost, ' and no movement is being made. We may well ask, " How long ?"
