A festival m honor ot Martin Luther; therefbrmer, was held to-day at Erfurt; a town m Saxony,- m which is situated the monastery of Sfc Augdstine, containing the cell °t Luther. The festival was moat, successful, about 100,000 persons being precent. The Kight Rev. Dr. Thornton, Bishop of Ballarat, whohas been engaged for some .time m collecting subscriptions m England m aid of the funds of .hi? diooese, has received a fair share of support. The subscriptioDs to date amount to £5000. The bishop win leave England for Victoria on the 25th instant, travelling via San Francisco. A debate .took place., to-day m ; the House of Lords upon the report of the select committee to consider the scheme for the construction of a ship canal from the Mersey to Manchester.
