Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) Survant la verste. FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 1883. A BROKEN PLEDGE.

WE understand that; the Mayor has, received a communication from J. Q. Wilson, Esq. M,K.R.,;giving^thV substance of the interview between Meßsrs Wilsotj, Stevens, and Seddon, M.H.K's., and the Minister for . Public Works, as published m a Standabd Extra; on Tuesday evening. It is quite apparent that Mr Johnston does not care a straw about our wants or wishes m the matter of the Gorge railway. The letter contains really nothing An addition to what has already; appeared m our I Extra. It is not likely that Mr J6hnston, as a mem ber of, thti Cabinet, will use any influence he may possess m furthering the interests ol Palmerston, and the tenor of the reply from the Cabinet may be safely anticipated. The . proposal may now be taken as virtually hung up till next session^ when it ia to be hoped Manawatu will be represented by a resident member, and one who has some little regard ior the progress of the place and the wishes of his constituents. An illustration: is < herein afforded of the vanity of expecting great tr.iugs fom a representative because he happens to hold a portfolio? Had Manawatu interests been entrusted to a resident we should hot have had cause to complain of the apathy with which the electors bare been treated, or of the broken pledges that our present member mvs t have charged to his account. The issue should be a legßcm to Manawatu.

■ml to ihe Colony at larye, t.j bo oarefu 1 ia whom the confidence of the electors is reposed.
