[Herald Correspondent.] * The Counties Act Amendment bill passed the second reading, and the Land Acts Amendment bill next occupied the attention id the House m Committee. A manifest desire is shown by allparties to bring the session to a speedy close, and although there are rumours of wars to come, very little credence can be attached thereto. There are ao. fewer than forty-eight questions still on the Order Paper, mostly standing m the name of Opposition members. It is said this is a piece ot revenge on the Govemmant for appropriating private members' , days. The opinion goes that Sir George Grey will not take any farther steps to , neck an enqniry on the basis ot the charges made last night, feeling that after the Dargaville experience it is impossible to obtain a fair committee; and in* the face of Atkinson's objection to the production of the returns, the enquiry would be a farce without such returns. No one could- accuse Mr J. W. Thompson of being excruciatingly funny, but he means to have his little joke— at least, so it is rumoured. As .a set-ofi to Mr Batbgate's motion, ji fewjiays ago, (0% the founding of a legislative capital m j the Middle Island, Mr Thompson contemplates moving,, upon going into Committee of Supply, That a legislative capital be founded on the summit of Mtiunt Cook. This is a laudable ejjort to raise the position of the Legislature.
