The Body Found.
TEE IfcQCJESTi: The remains of the man found in the Manawatu river wore brought to A.shurst by Constable Price, of Feilding. .They Mrere in such an advanced stage of decomposition, that identification was quite impo-sibie, The remains were { found suspended in the fork of a snag,'* where they had evidently been deposited hy a recent, flood, a covering of supple-; jacks and other debris being partially over. them. < The work ofc .getting th<a/ remains into a coffin was a moac repulsive duty for tne police to perform, the stench of decay bßing fearful. Eventually the coffin was got through' a^ bush track to a ;dray, which w,as ia\ waiting, and so brought to the Hotel, when the inquest was held before the District Coroner, JV 11. Jtacarthur Esq. The relatives of tne man whose remains they were supposed to be, had been communicated with, bat they did not appear to give evidence. It Jis doubtful if any of them could have .identified the decomposed mass whichc had once been "a human being./^ne arm waß gone, and the flesh rotting Ivom the bones. The only possible identification was a pair of elastic- side boots on the feet, and would formal batr a very, l slight clu«. The evidence of finding the remains W4S, taken, and a \ verdict of %t Fouud Drowned" returned. There is every reason to sspposa tha& the remains were those of the unfortu* uate man Marsom who was seen to jump into the river some" three months ago. Some of his relatives we e^met going up towards Ashurst after the inquest, as if to attend the faneial. ; ' [6ince the above was in type we hear that the relatives identified che remains by a portion of che clothing. |
