Fully fifteen bundled people assembled on the Queen's WUrf on Sunday afternoon on the arrival of the steamer W«maka' trom Lyttelton to the landing of Major Pollard, the "pfficer commanding" the Salvation Army m New Zealand, among them being a number of his friends, as i rWell as a large proportion of the larrikin j element, who, for some reason of which ; they themselves' wonld probably be unable to give an explanation, appeared to think that the occasion was one that shouldnot be lost* The " Major " was one of the first to land, and he inarm* ,diateiy walked- down the wharf with those who had dome to receive him, being followed by a large crowd . ' ' l Major Pollard, reached the Princess theatve about five o'clock^ being; escorted through the city by a large number .of friends. They were met by a ;lar^e concourse of peoplo, who for hours past had waited his arrival outside the building; The cortege for a moment hidted outside, and a passage being made, Major Pollard obtained after spme difficulty entrance to the stag®} apd presented himself to his audience. Aifter le&yiog the hall the crowd which had escorted Major Pollard to the officers Quarters m Lome-street beoame inbre aemo'nstrative, and for a time tbiere was a risk of all good feeling being lokt, Lome street being 'threatened to be inundated by a mob. The peoplei howeyeri remained good-tempered, and by displayed; by Clapt. Oolley k^d-liieut. J?rancw the difficulty waß overcome. 1 -The police, under Sergeant Price, materially assisted m keeping order.
