: - — : — , • The New Zealand Herald's London correspondent's letter of date June 14, has the following item : — Justice Butt, the Judge, of the Divorce Court, has just pronounced a decision which will be read with painful interest ia New South Wales and New Zealand, where the parties to the suit were well-known. Major Edward Beauehamp St. John, son-in-law of one of the most popular colonial Governors, applied for a dissolution of his irarriage, on the ground of his wife's adultery with Major Q. Newcome Stevenson. The painful details of this miserable case have not been reported at any length, but the main facts are shortly these: — M»joi and Mrs Sf, John were married m Ceylon on the Bth of June, 1870, and there was one cbild of the marriage. They lived happily at various places at which petitioner held appointments. Iv August, 1882, Mrs rit. John left her husband m the Cape Colony, and wane to this country with her child and her mother. Respondent and her husband parted en affectionate terms, but on his arrival here last December he received a letter from her, stating that he had always tnated her with kindness and consideration, but that she had long before ceased to care for him, and did not intend to return to co- habitation. Evidence was given that respondent and co-respondent had stayed at an hotel m this country as man and wife. The Court pronoanced a decree nisi, with costs. Major E. B. St. John, having relinquished tie appointment of Military Secretary to Sir Hercules Robinson, Governor of Cape Colony, has been succeeded by M ojor G. 15. Boyle, Rifle Brigade.
