More detailed reports concerning the I murder of Carey show that Carey's wife and children were passengers on board the sun s vessel. o!.Dpnnell is ; also a* married man, and was keeping company with his wife and family. It is auth-l oritatively slated that < J'Donnell was an! emissary o( the American Fenians, who! despatched him by the -steamer. Melrose; for t;he express purpose of the assas-i imvtion ot Carey. Upon the arrest of <>*D6nneil his cab^ri was searcli°d, ; and amongst the luggage m his possession an infrrnal machine was discovered. From this it is believed that if O'Donnell failed to kill Carey m any o r her wa/, he was commissioned to ,se ure hit* object by the destruction of the vessel. Carey never spoke jiftgrthe shot wis fir ;d; The body of Carey hag been landed at Port Kiizabeth. The wounds show'-d that O'Donn ll had fired twicp, one shot taking effect m the neck, an i the other lodgingjiu the back. After the occurrence Carey lived 20 minut' s before death supervened.- O'Don•:ell has been pUoed ia prison, strong >y guarded, as an attempt at a rescue was anticipated . i
