Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILT.) Suivant la verite. TUESDAY, LULY 31, 1883. FROZEN MEAT.
The -following extract in reference to the' British King's cargo is from a letter written by W. P. Davidson, General Af anagei of the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, to Mr T. Bhydone, the OolonialMaqager of the Company, dated Jane 18 th ;— ♦' The British King's cargo of frozen meat has been mismanaged ia Christchurob, and a few more shipments of a similar kind will Leayp New Zealand ou a par with A ustralian shipperg. Our parcel was right enough, and has sold at nearly 7d perlb, barring twenty-two sheep that are still missing, but those ooneigned to the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency* Company contain a large number in bad order. Many are green and tainted at the bones from being kepi too long before freezing, and qthers are mildewed, and some hnve a sort ot I fungus growing over them, I attribute the whole evil to downright carelessness at Chriatchurch. I fanoy the sheep showing mildew and fungus have either not been allowed to* Btari3 * Wd'cbol be-" fore killing, or the carcases have not be#n properly set or hud not the animal best sufficiently thrown off before freezing, or they have been frozen too rapidly. ; The^whOle business only 'needs common sense and care and adherence to the rule we have proved to ensure a certainty in the business. I hope you will join with o|,hej: shareholders in the Chrisfcohurch Refrigerating Company to agitate against such mismanagement, tha effects of which will soon injure the colony by spoiling a trade which needs all possible nursing, We cannot do too much to keep things up to the mark, and to maintain the character of our frozen meat, which until now has been first-rate. 11
